My girlfriends Lady A and HRH T attended a fashion event at Dillard’s in The Mall at Green Hills.
We were greeted with smiles, gift bags, fabulous appetizers, wine and so much more!

It was a Fashion Affair featuring Fall Trends and Mila, President of MODA provided fashion tips with real models who live and work in Nashville.

My "personal consultant" was none other than Sensational Cynthia who has the best taste!

Desserts, champagne, and shopping for beautiful items was just what the doctor ordered...of course it rates as a "Top night in Nashville"...Dillards is having a upcoming event on October 25th for their new multi million dollar renovation so get your tickets now!

My daughter and I took in the exhibit "A Divine Light" at the Frist Center and were greeted by the fabulous and beautiful volunteer Genma. We laughed and shared stories of leaderership, service and beauty. It is my pleasure to introduce you to this remarkable woman. Meet Genma Holmes, an entrepreneur, writer, radio host and a Divine Light. She believes in living your dreams, being passionate about life and serving others with grace and humility. She works for, writes about, and speak to things that are dear to her heart. Including her wonderful children and the challenges of motherhood. Her business ventures from owning Holmes Pest Control to writing and publishing to continuing to work in the fashion industry and her radio show. Genma's love of the environment and her work with non-profits that help young people be the leaders of tomorrow. And of course, her love of her grandfather's legacy...political and social activism that will help change how we see the world we live in. She is one fantastic and passionate woman. What to Think Vs. How to Think?

It has always been that I use to many "complex" words, or my thoughts are really opinionated when I write an essay, but this just made me laugh. Every other week we write essays on what ever we want called 2Fers. So the first week was pretty interesting. I wrote on the topic of high school students, Junior Year, Etc. I took two days to write it, and I got a really good reception back from fellow classmates. I received an 80%... Now this week's 2Fer I wrote in 2 hours. I read one article, and basically reflected on it. Funny enough I received a %92 percent! I wrote and thought so much more leniently than I had ever before, life is funny.

Teacher Feedback: I can tell that this is a very personal topic/idea for you. I want to thank you for writing about it. What struck me about your piece is that even as a Junior in HS, you have a clarity on this topic that is far beyond your years. Additionally, I would like to see the same clarity in communicating your ideas: stating a thesis, making clear arguments and developing your talking points.

Here is a Paragraph from the First Essay

Children, primarily the United Students learn most of their social skills at home before entering any type of institution of education. Their goals and dreams can be inspired by their parents, environment, etc all at a young age. Is it critical in this time at home that children travel down the pre-paved road to life? According to a study done by the National Council for the Social Studies done in 1998, kindergartners learn how to interpret rules and regulation so they can abide to law in society. Early childhood education is imperative to the human beings success. But is an education mandated and controlled by one perception better than experiencing life itself? From their first education experienced children are taught to believe what the teacher believes and nothing else, and yet school is supposed to help us prepare for leading the world. Knowledge is the number one goal of a child’s elementary years. Being able to love it , retain it, and know it is why children learn about Columbus's epic tale to the Indies. The mind is so powerful that a high school student wouldn’t even noticed a subconscious trait that they had learned in elementary school. Many people around the world expect that young children would know nothing about anything, from pre-school all the way to senior in high school. It is when someone gets a degree or is validated by some other form merit, they become a contributing member of society.

Born in AbidJan, Côte d’Ivorié , Didier Drogba has been one of the best strikers playing soccer for awhile now. At thirty-three years old he has had played for clubs Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea, and the Côte d’Ivorié national team. He has been named the African Player of the Decade (2000-2010), and has been put on time magazines “100 most influential people of 2010 list.” As a child he spent a very short time in his home of native West Africa, and moved to France with his uncle at a young age. He began playing soccer in his teenage years, eventually coming to be the man he is today. The political problems in his native Ivory Coast, have spawned all out wars between different groups, and with political unrest comes violence. Most of the problems in Côte d’ivorié can all be tracked to the early 2000’s when a president who supported Northern Muslims, and discriminated against Southern African Christians who make a majority of the country. Abidjan, the largest city in the country has been the center of the Second Ivorian Civil War. Drogba has been a representative for the Ivorian people ever since he started playing soccer, it is now that he is asking his fellow Ivorian to stop the violence for the sake of the countries future. Drogba is a symbol of pride and peace for the country and although not all Ivorians will agree with him, they’ll certainly listen to him. The pride of the Ivory Coast that Drogba displays every time he steps on the pitch, represents all of the Ivorian people, and their love for their nation and the sport of soccer.

Garden Tour 2011

We opened our garden here at Wellington Court & Gardens for the WCRC Garden Tour!
The day proved hot but did not stop the beauty of nature and fun.

I was told my girlfriend's daughter added to the Beauty of the garden! Yes she does!!

My Granny was represented and with me in the form of her platter the iced tea sat on...

To think that we imagined this garden 3 years ago and built it plant by plant...with the help of loving friends like Ruby & Doc and our brother Dan from Squim Washington. We are most grateful for their love, support and adding so much Love to our garden! Hope to see you on the Tour next year.

Like their mother before them and their Glammi' before her...they discovered Woodland Park Zoo where Bo Bo and Fi Fi once lived....

Cultural Divides Part 2

Upon further investigation of cultural division it appeared to show its face in areas of fear and superiority/inferiority complexes. Call it what you'd like; sexism, classism, racism, caste system, intellectualism, etc it all comes down to the "golden rule" of treating others the way you would like to be treated. That said, not everyone wants to be treated with respect and their principals may not align with your way of living. I love the quote from Mr. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Manners and behavior are of utmost importance in order that we as a community get along and benefit the whole. It is how you " act, interact and react" to people, places and situations that determine your experience.

Every city and community I have moved in I made sure to take the time to listen and learn as many have been there before me. I enjoy hearing tales of how the community was formed, who came and went. There is nothing new under the sun as they say. We are here but for a measure of breaths and it is my intention to breathe healthy beautiful breaths therefore I do not like spending precious moment tearing down but instead I prefer to build and create bridges.

Cultural Divides first take place in the mind and are acted out. When we judge we create separation and can not receive. Remember that judgment creates separation. Practice being open to new situations and people. Every moment is a new beginning and an opportunity to experience something you have never experienced. Let's build healthy strong bridges together and share this beautiful Earth knowing that others will come after us and be grateful we have left a blueprint for successful sustainable living!

Experiences of Culture

What comes to your mind when you say the word culture? How about cultural influence?

The word "culture" is most commonly used in three basic senses:

Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture
An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning
The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group

As I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington in West Seattle and lived briefly in San Diego California and also in Huntingdon Valley Pennsylvania before moving to Nashville Tennessee I have had a few experience of culture across the country. For the last two and a half years I have had many unpleasant experiences where I currently reside. The workshops, conferences and transformation coaching I have done over the past twenty odd years should have provided me with the skills to handle such situations. Sadly it did not. There was more learning and exploring for me at the ripe age of 49. I took to research and oral/written interviews of the locals to get to the "root" of the challenge.

Here I will share what I found. Ruth Benedict did extensive research and I had come to many of her conclusions twenty odd years ago.

Benedict, in Patterns of Culture, expresses her belief in cultural relativism. She desired to show that each culture has its own moral imperatives that can be understood only if one studies that culture as a whole. It was wrong, she felt, to disparage the customs or values of a culture different from one's own. Those customs had a meaning to the people who lived them which should not be dismissed or trivialized. We should not try to evaluate people by our standards alone.

Because my challenges were with brown people in the South I found this interesting.

Environment has more to do with intelligence than birth does, including how much money is spent on schools. "Southern Whites", for example, scored below "Northern Negroes" in the IQ tests administered to the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in World War I. And the per capita expenditures on schools in the South were only "fractions" of those in northern states in 1917.

Almost 100 years later the scores are still the same. Why?

After many interviews with locals and people who migrated here from the "North" I believe I am on the trail of discovering the "Truth".

Simple pleasures of chocolate dipped strawberries or silver platter and goblets of tea...

A Not So Secret Garden in Pacific Palisades

It is that time of the year when society on a whole seems to celebrate the renewed birth
of humanity. Growing up in a warm household of loving siblings we were surrounded by
caring families in our community in Seattle. This picture was in our dining room and moved
from house to house. It always captured "truth" and was the picture of pure Love for me.
It now hangs safely in my library and art studio. In any given moment I am transported to a
time of safety, love, unquestionable caring and feeling connected.
Is it possible that we all come into this delicious world with a measure of faith and a
bounty of Grace? I believe we do...take the time to realize that you are indeed special!

Have you heard the tale of the beautiful garden that was a bit lonely for lack of company?

It was well tended and loving hands brushed its lushness often...but it yearned for beating hearts. The birds, bees and crickets could take it no longer and told the lookout dog to be on guard for something magical to bring the garden back to life.

As the sun was setting...there to the left he spotted something moving, laughing and running!

He beckoned the "something" and ask if he were magic...the "something" giggled and ran away.

A little dog heard the gardens cry and guided the "something" to an opening towards the sunlit garden. " I hear you laughter and watch you run often " said the dog. " We are in desperate need of magic and there are secrets in the garden across the path...won't you come see?

" Look into the looming lens of the lookout dog's eye and you will discover unlimited Love & Joy"
said the dog. After a few giggles...he looked straight into the lens of possibility and....

experienced Love Unlimited and Joy unspeakable...he found the Secret of family!

Seattle In Nashville?

I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me the other day...first thing I spotted was the signature Red... umbrella

After parking my car I stepped up to the door and walked practically into the Seattle Public Market... now you need to understand that I was born and raised in Seattle and have spent many of young days at "Pike Place Market" as we call it....

After questioning the talented Travis and Tami and waiting for my girlfriend to
arrive at "SBC" ...again as "we call it" in Seattle....I ordered
A Raspberry Chai latte, 2 percent, heavy on the foam....just like a typical Seattlelite...ugghh...it was sooooo delicious....You MUST go to SBC and experience the madness...they open early and close late...yeah...maybe I could do a bit of poetry, write or vibe with friends! It's off Harding & Kenner across from Jamie next to Publix....now Go Go Go!

She gave up part of her summertime freedom from NYU to fly to Nashville to assist our family
in time of great need. My darling husband was ill and down for 3 weeks...our Angel Ericka
prepared dinner, baked pies, took the children school shopping and much more!

Isn't she lovely...but of course! So gentle and caring...and greatly loved by her Auntie & Uncle...her character and Heart are show traits of just what Angels are made of. Do you have an Angel in your life?

This Morning

This morning...faded memories of my Granny came into view...slightly discolored but nevertheless still fragrant and sweet... picking vegetables from her garden and the lone rosebush waiting to bring life to anyone willing to gently pick just one flower...

my mind traveled through time spent in her front garden with her dog Speedy and coffee brewing while she and Uncle Gert prepared breakfast of buttered pancakes and crisp bacon...

I can capture such a moment in time...can't I? So I prepared the terrace table complete with a few roses from my Queen Elizabeth rose bush...the garden sat quietly...watching and waiting.

my daughter help prepare the pancake batter and mixed quite well the ingredients...the bacon crackled in the oven...coffee brewing loud enough to be heard but gently enough for the aroma to escape throughout the house.

Naturally I invited my assistant to dine with me on this quiet and oh so beautiful morning.

I was walking through the Nashville Farmer's Market and there...I spotted her...realizing I was in the Presence of Greatness I turned slightly to the left of her and I smiled...

Within minutes my children were picking hats and asking questions...the Angel gently answered and took her sweet time listening to my children and properly fitted them their desires...

Her hands were beautifully mastered and spoke of years sharing their Loving Touch...crocheting, mothering, grandmothering, laughing and loving over sixty wonderful years...ahhhh Lily

Me And A Shadow

Do you remember the poem "My Shadow" by Robert Louis Stevenson? My mother recited that poem often in my childhood and introduced me to the verse of RLS... I want to share a kind of shadow with you that does not come along often. Such joy to spread on a happy Spring day!

Yesterday I went on a "Betty Walker Tour" to Shadow Nursery in Winchester Tennessee and met this amazing handsome man....his name is Don Shadow...he is full of life and his love of plants

and animals reflects his love of all things living! Aren't the yummy maples gorgeous?

A Sister In The Garden

Puttering about in the garden one day...my lonely wheelbarrow beckoned me to come...IF...he asked..."you could have one thing this very moment, what would it be?" I could smell the aroma of freshly baked scones topped with gobs of raspberry jam and said aloud...

"At this moment I would have a sister who loves to laugh, dig, till, plant and bring beauty into her world. One that would share her flowers... her secrets of cultivating, propagating, and circulating the beauty that oozes from her soul...one that would allow me to enter into her
private world and allow me to partake as a creator with her...

She would teach me to overwinter plants, make herbal remedies, skin creams and dried arrangements with spent flower, pressed flowers, hair ornaments and all things natural...

...she would tell me the closely held secrets of indoor orange groves, solariums and fairy gardens galore! We would laugh, read and write poetry and prose, sip tea, cut flowers, enjoy our pets and lay on the grass...if I had a sister in the garden at this moment...I'd need nothing else!"

Quiet poked her head slowly and looked in my directon...I awoke with my Tasha Tudor book on my chest and smiled...

Jewelry, Painting and Beauty Oh My!

One of the many things I love about Nashville is being a member of Cheekwood and taking classes on everything from plants to painting.

Of course I love the beauty of the grounds and the friendly staff!

This month I am taking a jewelry class and will make fun stuff to wear! And I went to a Lunch and Lecture on the Impressionists plein air painters this afternoon...

My lunch was beautiful...and tasty...a perfecto cobb salad!

Jean from the Chestnut Group shared insights on the impressionists movement and techniques.

I was so inspired that I am ready to frame my scene and paint the land and join the movement. Once again...Cheekwood gets it right!

Wildflowers of Tennesse

On Saturday our garden club was granted a tour of the most beautiful wildflowers
located in our tour guides backyard...Jack has over 200 acres and shared a special section.

The weather was inviting and nature was ready for her close up!

Nordstrom State of Mind

I remember the day I received my Nordstrom credit card...July 16th 1978...it was a brown and white plastic ticket to purchase beautiful goods from one of Seattle's local department stores.

As years went by and Visa and Mastercard entered the consumer scene my Nordstrom card got lost in translation...My daughter Suzi and I would start a tradition of purchasing something special from the Chanel boutique or jewelry counter once a year. Many years later my daughter Wisdom and I started a tradition of having breakfast at the Grill or Cafe' and listening to the piano player tingle the keys...

We relocated to the East Coast and found Nordstrom in the King of Prussia Mall but once we moved on to the South we had to put our breakfast tradition on hold. With occasional visits back to Philadelphia...Wisdom has now discovered something other than fresh food at Nordy's...oh oh...the shoe department!
Forever the good guy, her father waits patiently on a comfortable chair outside the store....

Only to realize she has spotted another secret!

My mailbox was looking lonely and feeling quite neglected so I decided two months ago to pen a letter once a week to loved ones or friends near and far.

I enjoy decoupaging the stationary and writing fun and fancy titles to the addressee...
Letter writing has become an art of beauty, love and leisure for me!
The best part is putting up the red flag to signal to the postman that I have a special gift that needs to be delivered.... that my friend leaves my mailbox a bit cheery and much loved!

We Shall Not Be Moved

Last night I attended the We Shall Not Be Moved Reception & Private Preview held at the
Tennessee State Museum put on by the Museum Foundation. It was the 5oth anniversay of
Tennessee's civil rights sit-ins.

Many of the young people that participated in the sit-ins were there sharing their stories.

It was an evening of good food, good music and educational insights about courageous
people who realized that life moves forward and determination will always win...

Of course with all the fun came a wonderful opportunity for me to intersect with one very
cool and cute couple! They were the spice to complete the mix of goodness for me...

I am certain that I have discovered a treasure of a new friend and I know...We shall not be moved! The exhibit runs through May 16th so check it out if you're in the area.

This weekend I read a great book "My Grandfather's Son" by a very American boy who grew into a great man!
Like most boys he and his brother enjoyed the curious and often challenging things in life...

His life experiences were very close to what my husband shared. Being a year apart in age and growing up in the South it could be expected...might I add the beauty of both men!

And much like my husband, best friend and partner...this Supreme Court Justice has a wonderful supporting and beautiful wife. Life is good despite the early challenges, lessons, pains and drama. I have realized that one must work and have courage to get the outcome they desire. Clarence and Virginia Thomas I salute You!

I purchased this because I enjoy Robert Browning and Elizabeth and thought they were their children. Of course the Bombay Company where I purchased it didn't have the facts on the artist or orgin. It has served well in my victorian tearoom in Seattle and my parlor in Philadelphia. Such simple beauty and elegance of joyful living. Thank you Robert Morrison or Brooke for painting a joy forever. This morning after getting the children off to school ...I prepared my scone mix and baked them gently in the oven. While the tea was brewing and the scones baking... I went to the parlor and found my favorite teacup my daughter Suzi gave me for holiday 13 years ago. Sitting in my garden I shared the birdsong with warm strawberry scones and a hot cup of Joy. I agree with Henry James... there are a few hours more agreeable than this ceremony. Do you enjoy a slow cup of tea?
